From July 1, 2012, the National Standards Committee and the Ministry of Health jointly revised and issued the "sanitary standard for drinking water" (hereinafter referred to as the "new standard") which will be formally implemented, and all water plants will implement more stringent testing standards. The 106 indexes in the new standard are divided into routine inspection items and non routine inspection items. Among them, 42 items are routine inspection items, which must be uniformly verified by all regions; 64 items are non routine inspection items, and the specific implementation date shall be determined by the provincial people's government according to the actual situation, but the implementation of all indicators shall not be later than July 1, 2012 at the latest.

According to the environmental function and protection target of surface water area, it can be divided into five categories according to the function level
Class I is mainly applicable to headwater water and National Nature Reserve;
Class II is mainly applicable to the first level protection area of centralized drinking water surface water source, habitat of rare aquatic organisms, fish and shrimp production field, feeding field for young and young fish, etc;
Class III is mainly applicable to secondary protection area of surface water source of centralized drinking water, overwintering field of fish and shrimp, migration and access, aquaculture area and other fishery waters and swimming areas;
Class IV is mainly applicable to general industrial water use areas and recreational water areas where human body is not directly contacted;
Category V is mainly applicable to agricultural water use areas and water areas with general landscape requirements.
Corresponding to the above five types of surface water functions, the basic project standard values of surface water environmental quality standards are divided into five categories, and the standard values of corresponding categories are implemented for different functional categories. The standard value of high water function category is higher than that of low water function category. If the same water area has multiple functions, the standard value corresponding to the highest function category shall be executed. It is the same meaning to realize the function of water area and reach the standard of function category.
